It seems timely with all the emotions swirling around after last week’s election to talk about the beauty of choice in our day to day lives. Sometimes we forget that the freedom and power of choice is one of the greatest gifts given to us. Our state’s legendary college basketball coach Jim Valvano, an eternal optimist once said in a landmark speech…
” There are 86,400 seconds in a day, and it’s up to you to decide what to do with them.”
It’s estimated that adults make over 30,000 decisions in a day! And while that’s hard to believe, we do make endless choices from dawn to dusk. Everything we do is a choice. From what we wear to what we eat, from the tasks we tackle to what we do, and even from what we say and how to say it. We choose how we think, react and move. Some of these decisions are more conscious than others – we sometimes unknowingly lean towards something we want and away from something we don’t. Many are based on how we feel in the present moment, others are made from past experiences. Decisions are based on our unique nuances, values, likes and dislikes. Each day we awaken is a chance to start anew. Each day is a chance to make choices that serve us well, lift us up and lift others up.
“You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” ~ Dr. Seuss
The content of our character lies in our choices. Choice is part of why we’re here on Earth. We learn and gain wisdom from good choices and those that don’t serve us or others. And every choice we make has a ripple effect. Some of those ripples are barely noticeable while others go on forever. So treasure this power, listen to your intuition, and try to let each choice move your forward.
So today choose to live by choice, not by chance. To be motivated, useful, and positive. Today choose to be a little better, go a little farther, or stay on the right course. Today choose to be happy, peaceful, and content. Today and every day, choose to bring light and love to all.
XOXO, Heather
