A friend of mine posted some short, sweet advice on being yourself and having fun. The post pictured a woman jumping for joy, and the following words:
BE SILLY, BE FUN, BE DIFFERENT, BE CRAZY, BE YOU, BECAUSE LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO BE ANYTHING BUT HAPPY!
She looked like she was having so much fun; she was full of energy and joy. And it reminded me of a great quote by Captain Hook from Peter Pan: “Growing up is such barbarious business.” As adults, we forget how important it is to chase the fun and to make time for it. We forget to make time for play –from playing tennis to riding bikes, from a game of ball or golfing or even simply a board or card game – playing is SO much fun! And it is absolutely essential no matter how old we are.
“If you want to have the time of your life, change how you use the time in your life.” ― Tim Fargo
Having fun makes us feel lighthearted and carefree, and most often involves quality time with others. It’s good for the heart and soul. It boosts creativity and positivity, reduces stress and leads to a more fulfillment in life. Time flies, and life is too short to spend so much time in the serious without paying attention to our need for self-preservation. We all need to let loose, to let our hair down and have fun. And we shouldn’t ever feel guilty for it!
“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” – George Bernard Shaw
I was recently listening to a podcast series with one of my favorite writers, Glennon Doyle, and her wife Abby Wambach on the best advice they’ve ever received. In one of the sessions they quoted a good friend who’s learned to prioritize her “self-sovereignty.” Every time she makes a decision that serves and supports her body and mind, like taking a nap, exercising or going to lunch with friends, or does something fun she tells her family and employees “it’s for the good of the realm.” And indeed it is. She literally waves an imaginary wand in the air each time she says this because she knows she will be more patient, kind, focused and energetic for her circle by filling her own cup. When we cultivate our own happiness we can bring it to others – it’s contagious.
When we were kids we used to play outside until dusk. Playing and exercising all day and soaking up the sun was the norm. We felt creative, inspired, bold and were full of zest. It’s exactly what kids need more of now in order to get out of ruts caused by technology, social media and Covid. And it’s still what we, as adults, need today. So play on my friends!
“I am going to keep having fun every day I have left, because there is no other way of life. You just have to decide whether you are a Tigger or an Eeyore.” – Randy Pausch
