As a mom and business owner juggling many balls, I often find myself trying to manage everyone and everything around me – which never works of course. Can you relate? Perhaps this need to maintain control stems from my childhood – growing up as a big sister left in charge by parents who worked a lot to keep our heads above water. Though they lovingly balanced parenthood with work, fun and self-care, it wasn’t without stress. All too often, we subconsciously try to control everything and everyone around us. Maybe if we have everything “under control” our day will be easier, we’ll get everything accomplished on our to-do lists and perhaps can even push unwanted emotions aside to keep plowing forward. But that’s not healthy. In fact, this often leads to frustration and exhaustion.
There’s a new book by best-selling author and podcast queen Mel Robbins that’s flying off the shelves titled Let Them. Mel is known as an expert on mindset who provides simple tools and advice to improve your life. She does this by sharing her own experiences and stories in heartfelt, relatable and humorous ways. Her latest book encourages individuals to stop trying to control other people’s actions, opinions, and choices, and focus instead on managing their own responses.
I got this synopsis of the book on Google online: Let Them teaches you to prioritize your well-being by essentially letting go. Saying “let them do what they want” (outside of truly harmful behaviors) and not letting others’ expectations, actions or behaviors dictate your emotions, actions or reactions. Essentially freeing yourself from the burden of trying to manage everything around you.”
What a beautiful concept! The power of her latest advice is the perfect reminder that our peace doesn’t border on what happens with others on the outside. – it has to come from the inside. It provides a path to peace. After all, isn’t that what we’re all ultimately after? So, the next time you find yourself acting like a control freak (like me) remember that you’re not alone. Perhaps this good read will inspire us all to keep traveling down the yogic path of enlightenment through the freedom of letting go.
XOXO, Heather
